So, I was checking out my Facebook and my friend, straight, changed his status. I was so in shock, I just had to say something. The conversation looked like this:
It still makes me a little upset that people use that word so freely and think it won’t affect anyone around them. At first I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to make my friend feel awkward or uncomfortable, but I just had to say something to show that I was unhappy with his choice of words.
His response was :
Sorry! I didn’t mean it offensively. I’m just saying.
What? You didn’t mean for it to be offensive? You were “just saying”? Now, don’t get me wrong, my friend is extremely accepting and is one of the most non-homophobic straight guys I know, but his choice of words is something I do not agree with. He still meant it to make fun of whoever he is trying to make fun of. I guess I’m just disappointed that he still feels that using the word is okay as long as its meant to degrade another straight guy.
However, there is a glimmer of hope, the last comment on it, by Lauren, said.
Love, you should eliminate that word from your vocabulary. It’s fucking gross…
Thank you Lauren for being so brave in sharing your dislike with that word! I just did it in my passive-aggressive way to show my distaste in something.
I prefer not to use any degrading words at all… I can make make such a hardcore ‘bitch-face’ that words wouldn’t even be necessary.
