Long before gay idol Sailor Moon charmed us with her magical costume transformation, there was Hana no Ko Lunlun (花の子ルンルン) dazzling me with her magical outfit changes which are done by pointing her special locket to various species of flowers. Lunlun is probably the grandmother of all other magical girl animes that follow and with that, I dub the series as the gayest anime of all time.
I fell in love with the series back in the early 80′s when the show made it to my home country in the form of dubbed Betamax tapes. The story revolves around Lunlun, a young French orphaned girl who, with the help of her talking dog and cat companions, is given the task to find a magical seven colored flower. Something about the show mesmerized the budding gay boy in me. Was it the fact that the main plot of the show involves a rainbow colored flower? Was it her charming girlish demeanor that attracted me? Or was I entranced by her power–the power to change clothes magically by pointing her pin to a specific type of flower! Her special power is definitely the gayest I’ve ever seen in any anime. It’s probably been close to 30 years since I’ve seen this anime and I would love to watch it again. If anyone knows where I can get the entire series with English subtitles, let me know!
